From celebrated director Ham Tran comes this modern-day horror film set in Vietnam. Hollow opens with a horrific death of a young girl and the battle that is waged for her soul among the living and the dead. We are introduced to the main character, Chi (Nguyễn Hồng Ân), a young woman who joins her family for some festivities at the start of the film. Estranged from her mother and stepfather, Chi reluctantly reunites with her family. In neglecting to mind her half sister soon after arriving, however, she accidentally causes the tragic death of Ái who drowns in a nearby river. It is Ái’s policeman uncle, Thức (Jayvee Mai Thế Hiệp), who must journey to a small town to identify the child’s dead body in the morgue. Once there he finds that the girl has miraculously come back to life. Things seem to return back to normal for the family. But slowly the signs of a malevolent supernatural force take hold with the girl’s reappearance. Chi’s parents call a female shaman (Kiều Chinh) to perform an exorcism on Ái. The shaman concludes that a drifting vengeful spirit has, indeed, inhabited the girl’s body. To find out the reasons for this, Chi takes a trip to the village where Ái was found dead. What Chi discovers is something more sinister than the presence of ghosts and demons—a terrible evil threatens to tear apart the entire village and that of her own family. For it appears that another little girl, seemingly possessed by an unforgiving lost soul, has experienced the same terrible fate as Ái. When Chi returns home with this girl, we find out that a monstrous spirit has followed Chi to the city with the intention of destroying the lives of those she loves. It is up to Chi to banish the dark spirits that have taken root in her family. This is the story of a family, a community, and the dark secrets that cannot be buried forever.
